In an indirect dig at Jana Sena Party president and Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan for his comments on the police, Director General of Police Dwaraka Tirumala Rao on Tuesday asserted that the police would go by the rule book, rather than the suggestions of politicians.
When asked to comment on Pawan Kalyan's comments that the police were looking into the caste angle while punishing the accused in rape incidents, the DGP said the approach of the police to criminal punishment and protection of the victims was based on the principle of justice.
The DGP emphasized that they are bound by the Constitution and would not act under political pressure.
He stated that they would investigate each case based on the actual circumstances. He also mentioned that the appropriate level of protocol should be provided as needed in each case.
Regarding Pawan Kalyan's remarks, the DGP asserted that the police must function impartially and transparently, and that this is exactly what they are doing.
He, however, admitted that several mistakes had occurred during the previous government.
“Even when there was an attack on the TDP office, not a single case was filed. The system for identifying fingerprints of criminals was removed during the previous administration, and we are looking into whether this was done intentionally,” he said.
He also referred to accusations of an MP being assaulted, but said that the facts on this issue had not yet been clarified.
The DGP disclosed that seven IPS officers had already been assigned postings after signing in, and three had been suspended.
He added that inquiries would be conducted against the remaining officers, and appropriate actions would be taken.
Regarding the rise in cybercrimes and social media harassment, the DGP mentioned that these issues have increased recently, and they are working to control them fully.
He concluded by stating that they are working within the framework of the law and the Constitution.
