The arrest of retired Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vijay Paul appears imminent in connection with the alleged custodial torture of former MP and current Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, K Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, during the YSR Congress Party-led government in 2021 under then Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Vijay Paul, whose anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court, presented himself before the investigating officer, Prakasam district Superintendent of Police (SP) Damodar, at the SP office in Ongole.
“Following the interrogation, the police are likely to formally arrest Vijay Paul and produce him before the magistrate for judicial remand,” sources said.
Paul was initially summoned for questioning on November 13 but reportedly provided little information, often claiming to have no recollection of the incident involving Raghu Ramakrishna Raju's custody.
On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by Vijay Paul seeking to quash the police case against him related to the alleged custodial torture.
The two-judge bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Prasanna B. Varale, upheld the continuation of the case during a hearing in New Delhi.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Raju, alleging he was subjected to custodial torture while in police custody.
With the Supreme Court's verdict, legal proceedings against Vijay Paul are set to move forward.
