Senior YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former minister Botsa Satyanarayana announced on Monday that the party will review its stance on the three-capital proposal for Andhra Pradesh and formulate a new policy.
Speaking during a discussion in the state legislative council, Botsa admitted that the YSRCP initially supported the three-capital plan, introduced by party president and former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
“That was our stand at the time. Given the changed scenario, we will review our position and come up with a new policy,” he stated.
Jagan Mohan Reddy had even passed legislation in the state assembly to implement the three-capital model, which was later challenged in the High Court and Supreme Court.
The YSRCP campaigned on this policy during the 2024 elections, but after a massive electoral defeat—winning only 11 assembly seats—the party faced rejection in the very regions designated for the proposed capitals.
With the Chandrababu Naidu government actively advancing Amaravati’s development, the YSRCP is now reconsidering its position.
Addressing the legislative council, Botsa confirmed that the party would reassess its capital policy in light of the new circumstances.
“Our earlier decision was based on the situation at that time. Given the changing landscape, we will deliberate internally and announce our final decision soon,” he explained.
Acknowledging his past remarks where he described Amaravati as a "graveyard," Botsa defended his statement, arguing that it was relevant six years ago.
“During the TDP regime, they didn’t even spend â¹6,000 crore on Amaravati. That’s why I questioned its purpose if it had turned into barren land,” he clarified.
