Dev Katta's Mayasabha teaser was released today, and the entire teaser seems like an attempt to portray Naidu’s character as heroic.
The first striking detail is Naidu smoking — a point of contention, as many from the current generation aren't even aware if he smoked in real life. Though the film is said to be fictionalized, such small details often ignite debate.
Coming to the content feel, the teaser gives the impression of another Kathanayakudu or Mahanayakudu — a one-sided, glorified tribute.
Towards the end, there’s a controversial dialogue where a Reddy asks Naidu, “You were born in a farmer's family, why politics for you?” Naidu responds, “You were born in a tax-collecting rowdy family. Why politics for you?” — followed by both characters laughing.
This exchange is seen by many as an attempt to demonize the Reddy community while glorifying the other.
It's surprising how OTT platforms approved and bought this product, especially given how quickly they usually reject content over potential legal trouble. If anyone files a legal complaint, the show might face serious issues.
It remains to be seen whether such action will be taken, as the teaser arguably brands a community — and a former CM — as “rowdies.”
Dev Katta may be thinking that this dialogue can be muted in the original streaming version, but deliberately released it to stir up free publicity. However, certain attempts can prove costly if things go wrong or the wrong shoulders are rubbed.
