An Indian woman visiting the US is under investigation after allegedly attempting to steal merchandise worth $1,300 (approx. â¹1.1 lakh) from a Target store in Illinois.
She reportedly spent over seven hours inside the store before attempting to leave with a cart full of unpaid items, prompting staff to alert the police.
In newly surfaced police bodycam footage, a Target employee can be heard saying, "We saw this woman roaming around the store for the last 7 hours. She was picking up items, checking her phone, moving between aisles, and eventually tried to walk out the west gate without paying."
The woman apologized and tried to explain her situation to the police, saying, “I am really sorry to bother you. I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here.”
In response, a female officer remarked, “Are you allowed to steal things in India? I didn’t think so.”
Despite offering to pay, the woman was handcuffed and taken to the police station. While she hasn't been formally arrested, she faces felony theft charges.
The incident, captured on video and shared on YouTube, has sparked online debate around immigration, cultural conduct, and legal accountability.
“As an immigrant, you represent your country. This is shameful,” one user commented. Another added, “There is no cultural or language confusion—she knew exactly what she was doing.”
Target has yet to release an official statement, and authorities are expected to provide further updates.
The case follows another recent incident involving an Indian student accused of shoplifting in Texas. Legal experts warn that such charges can seriously affect visa holders, including risks to H-1B extensions, green card applications, or even deportation.
