It is known that many Malayalis were angry with Bollywood film 'Param Sundari' for portraying Kerala women as having loose character, easily falling for others and craving attention from good looking men. However, the makers later apologized. Now, it is the turn of Kannadigas.
The Malayalam film 'Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra' (released as 'Kotha Lokah' in Telugu) faced strong criticism for a dialogue that insulted women from Bengaluru.
The character Inspector Nachiyappa Gowda, played by choreographer Sandy, said he would not marry a woman from Bengaluru because they are “characterless.”
Viewers also objected to how the movie showed the city as a place of parties and drug abuse. This led to outrage on social media and anger among the public.
Following the backlash, Wayfarer Films, led by actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan, released a public apology.
The production house admitted that the dialogue unintentionally hurt people’s sentiments and promised to make corrections.
They assured audiences that the controversial line would be removed or edited and requested forgiveness from the public.
The matter has also drawn official attention. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh confirmed that the Central Crime Branch’s social media monitoring cell will review the issue. He added that further action will be taken if any violations are found.
