A 29-year-old Indian-origin man, Varun Suresh, has been charged with murder in Fremont, California, after brutally stabbing 71-year-old registered sex offender David Brimmer to death.
Police described the killing as a “targeted attack” and arrested Suresh at the scene, recovering the knife used. Despite emergency aid, Brimmer — convicted in 1995 for child sexual assault — died from multiple stab wounds.
According to court documents, Suresh admitted to police that he had long wanted to kill a sex offender, saying “they hurt children” and “deserve to die.”
Investigators revealed he had used California’s Megan’s Law database to track down Brimmer, whom he had no personal connection with.
On the day of the attack, Suresh allegedly disguised himself as a CPA, carrying a bag, notebook, and coffee to look authentic while knocking on doors.
After confirming Brimmer’s identity, he shook his hand and declared, “I knew I had the right guy.” When Brimmer fled, Suresh chased him through two blocks into a neighbour’s garage, stabbed him in the neck while ordering him to “repent,” and finally slit his throat as the elderly man tried to crawl away.
Police later found multiple screenshots of registered sex offenders on Suresh’s phone — including Brimmer’s profile, taken just 45 minutes before the 911 call reporting the stabbing.
In interviews, Suresh showed chilling indifference, reportedly describing the killing as “honestly really fun” and insisting he felt “not sorry” at all.
He even told officers that, had police not arrived, he would have called them himself: “Everyone hates pedophiles… so like, it should be cool.”
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged him with murder, residential burglary, and use of a deadly weapon. Authorities say the incident was isolated and there is no wider threat to the community.
This was not Suresh’s first run-in with law enforcement. In 2021, he was arrested for making a fake bomb threat at a Fremont hotel, later telling police he believed the CEO of Hyatt Hotels was a pedophile and admitted he had been “hunting” him.
