The election dates for Bihar have been announced and Tejaswi Yadav might have just dealt the coup de grace to the Nitish Kumar government with his latest promise: A government job to every household in Bihar! Yes, you heard it right!
Speaking at a rally in Bihar. Tejaswi said, “Any Bihar family that does not have a government job will get one through a new legislation. We will bring this legislation within 20 days of forming the government and within 20 months, there will be no house in Bihar without a government job.”
He further added, “My promise is based on data. This can be done. This is no jumlebaazi.”
Till now, the RJD leader had been speaking on corruption, law and order and other developmental issues. But this latest freebie seems almost like a desperate act which is a bit strange considering that he is the frontrunner according to political analysts.
Maybe, he was unnerved by Nitish Kumar’s recent promise of unemployment allowance to the youth of Bihar.
Is the promise made by Tejaswi Yadav, feasible? Is it even constitutionally tenable considering that reservations and other factors also have to be taken into account? What will be the burden on the exchequer?
And most important of all, can it be executed within 20 months of the government being formed?
When even political parties from cash-rich States in India have never promised such a thing can a backward State like Bihar make it possible?
Unfortunately, in India, people only look at the promise and not its feasibility. In that sense, Tejaswi with this latest freebie might have scored a winning goal.
