Upasana Kamineni Konidela — entrepreneur, philanthropist, and wife of South superstar Ram Charan — recently reignited a national conversation on women freezing their eggs to prioritise careers.
After facing criticism online, she took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “I’m happy to have sparked a healthy debate & thank you for your respectful responses.”
Upasana comes from one of India’s most influential business families.
She is the granddaughter of billionaire Dr Prathap C Reddy, founder of Apollo Hospitals, a healthcare giant with a market cap of â¹98,320 crore.
As Vice Chairperson of CSR at Apollo Hospitals, she leads major social initiatives focusing on compassionate, dignified healthcare.
She also serves as Managing Director of FHPL (Family Health Plan Insurance TPA Ltd.).
Academically, Upasana holds an MBA from Regent’s University London and is also a Harvard alumna, trained in business leadership.
She sits on the boards of multibillion-dollar companies, including the Zydus Group, and is widely admired for encouraging Indian women to build financial independence and ambitious careers.
Upasana married Telugu megastar Ram Charan in 2012. They are parents to daughter Klin Kaara and are now expecting twins, a pregnancy she announced during Diwali via social media.
Controversy arose recently when a video from a Hyderabad event surfaced, where Upasana said, “The biggest insurance for women is to freeze their eggs. You can choose when to get married and when to have kids — on your own terms, when you are financially independent.”
Upasana’s personal net worth is estimated at â¹1,130 crore (around $135 million USD), stemming from her business ventures, leadership roles, and family assets.
Together, she and Ram Charan reportedly hold a combined net worth of over â¹2,500 crore (approximately $300 million USD).
