Defamation case: Noose tightens around Surekha

A special court in Nampally on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Telangana endowments minister Konda Surekha in connection with a defamation case filed by BRS working president and former minister K T Rama Rao (KTR).

The case pertains to Surekha’s objectionable comments last year against KTR, linking him to the divorce of actor Akkineni Naga Chaitanya with actress Samantha.

According to court records, the minister did not appear before the court despite earlier summons. Following this, the special court issued a non-bailable warrant to secure her presence.

After issuing the warrant, the court adjourned the case to February 5, 2026. The proceedings are expected to intensify, given the political sensitivities and the stature of the individuals involved. Readmore!

In October 2024, KTR filed a criminal defamation case against Konda Surekha for her alleged derogatory statement linking him with the divorce of actors Akkineni Naga Chaitanya and Samantha.

He sought criminal action against Surekha under Section 222 read with Section 223 (prosecution for defamation) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samitha (BNSS).

On October 3, senior Tollywood actor Nagarjuna also filed a similar criminal case against Surekha in the Nampally court for making personal remarks against his family, linking his son’s divorce to KTR.

Nagarjuna, too, accused the Congress leader of deliberately spreading lies with the sole aim of tarnishing his personal, professional and family reputation. However, he withdrew the case against Surekha recently after she tendered apology to him.

KTR said Surekha had misused her office and spoke out rank lies.

“As there is a possibility that people might think what she has said might be true, I have decided to file a defamation and criminal case against her,” he said.

Interestingly, Kavitha also accused KTR of being a drug addict and taking advantage of young female actors.

Surekha later told reporters that she was withdrawing her comments against Samantha and said she had all the respect for the actor.

She, however, said she would stand by her comments against KTR and was ready to face the legal battle.
