OTT Watchlist: 'Sarvam Maya'- Gentle Horror, Pleasant Humor!

"Sarvam Maya", the Malayalam film that worked well in theatres arrives as a refreshing change from the intense violence, dark moods and heavy investigative thrillers.

It is quiet, subtle and slowly seeps into the viewer’s mind without any loud dramatics.

Unlike conventional horror films filled with jump scares, loud background music, or forced comedy, Sarvam Maya stays away from both extremes.

It is not meant to frighten, nor does it rely on over the top humor. Instead, it gently explores a mental state, a life crisis and a man caught between belief and disbelief. Readmore!

The story follows a man born into a Namboodiri Brahmin family, raised with Vedic traditions.

The death of his mother shakes his faith in God, turning him into an atheist. He throws away his sacred thread and pursues his passion for music, working as a guitarist while trying to enter the film industry.

Despite talent, opportunities do not come his way. Financial struggles push him to a breaking point.

On his brother-in-law’s advice, he reluctantly resumes priestly rituals purely for survival, not belief. Things take a turn when he is asked to perform a ritual to cure a teenager believed to be possessed.

From here, the film moves into a light horror space, handled with restraint and grace, leading to a climax with a soft tragic touch that leaves an emotional weight rather than tears.

Nivin Pauly’s performance is the film’s backbone. His portrayal of inner conflict feels honest and understated. The humor is situational, gentle and warm.

Sarvam Maya may not appeal to those expecting loud horror comedy, but for viewers who enjoy calm, sensible storytelling, it offers a quietly satisfying experience.

The film is set to stream on JioHotstar from January 30, 2026. Directed by Akhil Sathyan, it belongs to the supernatural comedy fantasy genre and features Nivin Pauly in the lead role, alongside Riya Shibu and Aju Varghese in key roles.
