Accused in adulterated ghee case goes on leave!

As the charge sheet submitted by the CBI-led Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the case of alleged supply of adulterated ghee used in the preparation of Tirumala laddu prasadam, one of the main accused named in the charge sheet has suddenly gone on leave, raising many an eyebrow.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer (FA&CAO) O Balaji unexpectedly proceeded on leave, triggering widespread discussion within administrative and political circles.

Balaji, who served as a key member of the ghee procurement committee during the previous YSRCP government, has come under the scanner of the SIT.

In the charge sheet, the SIT has concluded that Balaji played an indirect role in facilitating the supply of substandard ghee by recommending relaxation of procurement norms.  Readmore!

The SIT authorities had written to the state government seeking stringent action against him, along with former executive officer Anil Kumar Singhal and former additional EO A V Dharma Reddy.

Amid these developments, Balaji has applied for a 20-day long leave — an unprecedented move in his tenure.

He cited health issues as the reason for his leave request on Monday, which was reportedly granted immediately through oral approval by newly appointed TTD Executive Officer Muddada Ravi Chandra.

However, the timing of his leave, coinciding with a crucial phase of the investigation, has led to allegations that he stepped aside anticipating action from the SIT.

Adding to the speculation, no in-charge has yet been appointed to handle his responsibilities during his absence.

Balaji is considered one of the most influential officials in TTD’s financial administration, with virtually every expenditure requiring his approval.

Having served in the finance wing for several years, he reportedly exercised significant control over financial decisions, including tenders, employee salaries, deposits and budget allocations.

Investigators have found that on February 14, 2020, Balaji recommended relaxation of tender norms, which allegedly opened the door for companies supplying adulterated ghee to secure contracts.

The SIT has identified his role in preparing key note files that eased previously stringent conditions governing procurement quality.

Despite being identified as a central figure in a controversy that allegedly compromised the sanctity of the revered Tirumala laddu prasadam, no formal action has yet been taken against him by the government, raising questions within administrative circles.
