A family emergency has turned into a major personal and professional crisis for a US-based NRI working on an H-1B visa.
After travelling to India to care for her critically ill mother, the woman is now unable to return to the United States because she cannot secure a visa appointment.
The situation came to light after a Reddit user shared the story of their friend, explaining how the sudden trip to India has left her stranded.
“My friend had to urgently fly from the US to India because her mother became very sick. Now she is stuck here and cannot get a visa appointment to return to the US. Her entire life is there — her home, job and responsibilities. The mortgage still has to be paid, along with the car loan and other bills,” the user wrote.
According to the post, the woman had built her life in the United States over several years. However, the inability to obtain a visa appointment has left her uncertain about when she can return.
The Reddit user said the situation has become extremely stressful, as the woman is now considering whether she might have to sell her house and manage her financial commitments from thousands of miles away.
“It is heartbreaking to watch someone who did everything right end up in such a situation,” the user wrote, asking others online for advice or suggestions.
Several users responded with messages of sympathy and encouragement.
One user praised the woman for prioritising her family.
“She went to care for her mother when she needed her the most. She should be proud of herself for being a devoted daughter. This situation may change the course of her life, but hopefully things will improve,” the user wrote, suggesting that she might explore the possibility of temporarily working from India.
Another user pointed out the risks immigrants face when they build financial commitments while on temporary visas.
“This is why I avoided investing or buying property abroad until getting permanent residency,” the person commented.
Others described the situation as a harsh reminder of the challenges many immigrants face while living and working abroad.
“This is the difficult reality of being an immigrant. Your life can suddenly come to a standstill because of visa issues, even after years of hard work,” another user wrote.
Despite the uncertainty, many commenters urged the woman not to regret travelling to see her ill mother, saying family should always come first.
