Opinion: Allu Family's Big Wrong Decision

The newly launched Allu Cinema has quickly become the talk of the town in the Telugu film industry.

The theatre is being promoted as a prestigious venue that houses India’s largest Dolby Cinema screen in Hyderabad. Its inauguration was a grand event with the Chief Minister attending as the chief guest.

Naturally, expectations were high that the venue would become a landmark for film lovers.

However, what should have been a celebration soon turned into a debate over the Wall of Fame installed inside the theatre. Readmore!

Soon after the opening, film enthusiasts and observers began questioning the names and pictures chosen for the wall.

Some critics pointed out that influential filmmakers such as Ram Gopal Varma, who revolutionized filmmaking in Telugu cinema during the 1990s, were not included. Others asked why directors like Puri Jagannadh were also missing from the list.

At the same time, people noticed that the names of Chiranjeevi and Allu Arjun appeared prominently, while legendary figures like N T Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna appeared in lighter fonts.

This visual contrast led some people to question whether proper balance and sensitivity were maintained while designing the display.

Another point of discussion was the placement of K. Raghavendra Rao alongside departed legends such as Dasari Narayana Rao and K Viswanath.

Some observers asked that if living legends were to be included, then why not senior filmmaker Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, who is widely respected as one of the most experienced filmmakers in the industry.

Another criticism that emerged was the absence of female legends. Icons like Savitri, Jamuna and Sridevi played an immense role in shaping Indian cinema and their absence raised further questions.

Beyond these individual debates lies a broader question. Telugu cinema has a history of nearly 95 years. From pioneers like Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu and K V Reddy to countless actors, directors, writers and technicians who shaped the industry, the list of legends is extremely long.

Any attempt to choose only a few names is bound to leave out many deserving personalities.

Perhaps the real lesson here is simple. A Wall of Fame in an industry with such a long and rich history can easily become controversial.

Instead of creating a selective list that invites criticism, the focus could have remained entirely on delivering a state of the art cinematic experience.

For today’s generation of audiences, the quality of the movie watching experience matters far more than reading a list of names on a wall.
