Legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam has come out in strong support of better work-life balance in the Indian film industry, specifically endorsing Deepika Padukone’s reported demand for an eight-hour work shift.
Speaking to NDTV during promotions for his upcoming film Thug Life, Ratnam addressed the growing conversation around accommodating working mothers in cinema.
“It’s fair if she’s a young mother and needs to care for her child,” Ratnam said. “She’s choosing something that allows her to do so without any hindrance.”
He also praised Deepika’s confidence in asserting her needs. “I think it’s nice when women ask for what they want and get what they want. It’s a very healthy sign.”
Ratnam’s remarks follow a controversy sparked by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who indirectly criticized Deepika for being ‘unprofessional’ after she reportedly requested eight-hour shooting days for his film Spirit — a request that allegedly led to her being replaced by Animal actress Triptii Dimri.
When asked if such requests should be accommodated, Ratnam replied, “I think so. If it doesn’t fit your film, move on — but respect what they’re asking. It’s a fair demand, and we need to acknowledge that.”
The veteran director’s comments have added momentum to a growing movement within Bollywood advocating for healthier working conditions, especially for parents.
Actor Saif Ali Khan recently voiced similar concerns at the Arab Media Summit 2025, saying, “I hate coming home and seeing the kids already asleep. That’s not success.”
Kajol and Ajay Devgn have also supported the idea of structured workdays, with Devgn noting, “Most honest filmmakers wouldn’t have a problem with eight-hour shifts for new moms. And now, most of the industry has begun adopting it.”
With Thug Life — starring Kamal Haasan — set to release on June 5, Ratnam’s endorsement signals that family-friendly practices in filmmaking may soon become the new normal.
