Following sharp criticism from the public and opposition parties, Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu appears to have reversed his earlier stance on restricting free bus travel for women within their respective districts.
On Wednesday, officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) clarified that there would be no restrictions on travel under the upcoming free bus travel scheme, which is set to take effect from August 15.
APSRTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao and Managing Director Dwaraka Tirumala Rao addressed concerns during a review meeting in Guntur.
Speaking to the media, Narayana Rao confirmed that women can avail themselves of free travel by presenting any valid identity card issued by the Central or State Government.
Managing Director Dwaraka Tirumala Rao further clarified that from August 15 onwards, women will be allowed to travel for free from any location to any destination within the state.
The scheme will apply to Palle Velugu (rural), Express, Metro Express, City, and Ordinary buses currently in operation.
Naidu, who is currently visiting Singapore, is expected to return to Amaravati on Wednesday night and will take a final call on the scheme during the upcoming cabinet meeting.
“An official notification on the scheme will be issued,” the RTC MD added.
This clarification ends the confusion that had arisen from contradictory statements made by the Chief Minister, ministers, and RTC officials regarding eligibility, identity verification, and applicable routes.
The MD also noted that detailed operational guidelines will be finalized and released soon.
