Mangalasutra Row: Chinmayi Seeks Police Action

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has become the target of severe cyberbullying and online harassment after her husband, actor-director Rahul Ravindran, expressed his views on the mangalsutra tradition during film promotions.

While promoting his upcoming directorial “The Girlfriend”, starring Rashmika Mandanna and set for release tomorrow, Rahul stated that wearing a mangalsutra should be a personal choice, adding that he had given his wife the freedom to decide whether or not to wear one.

His remark, however, triggered a wave of backlash online, with trolls directing abuse at Chinmayi.

Amid the growing online vitriol, Chinmayi tagged Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and the Cybercrime Division, urging swift action against the offenders. Readmore!

Responding to her post, the Hyderabad Police acknowledged the complaint and confirmed that the matter has been taken up for investigation.

Can Sajjanar Ensure Justice for Singer Chinmayi?

Twitter Spaces have increasingly become a platform where abusive language, especially against women, is spreading unchecked.

Though X (formerly Twitter) claims that Spaces are user-generated and not under their direct control, the question of accountability arises.

Other online platforms are often held responsible for moderating offensive comments, yet Spaces, being live voice sessions, seem to go beyond limits without regulation.

Popular singer Chinmayi recently expressed strong anguish after she was targeted with vulgar language during a Twitter Space session.

Instead of ignoring the incident, she joined the same Space to confront both the host and the participants.

Chinmayi pointed out that several of those using offensive language and clapping to such talk were reportedly from Telangana, and the Space itself was operated from there.

Taking the issue further, Chinmayi tagged Telangana’s top police officer, Sajjanar, demanding strict action.

Her move has sparked a debate on whether state authorities can take action against international platforms like X which are creating nuisance in Telangana, and if this case could set a precedent for future online accountability.
