“Marco” created a sensation at the box office, earning praise in Malayalam and making decent business in its Telugu dubbed version. The film catapulted Unni Mukundan into stardom.
He had earlier played supporting roles in Telugu films like Bhagamathie, Yashoda, and Janatha Garage.
However, “Marco” also drew heavy criticism for its extreme violence. One infamous sequence, where a pregnant woman is killed and her unborn child is ripped out, was widely condemned as one of the most disturbing scenes in Indian cinema.
Perhaps due to this backlash, Unni Mukundan has chosen not to return for the sequel. Director Abraham Joseph is moving forward with “Marco 2” but without the actor who headlined the original.
Reports suggest that Unni Mukundan is now focusing on bigger pan-Indian projects with broader appeal, looking to follow the path of films like Mirai.
