11-Year US Returnee Fails to Land Indian Job

An Indian professional with over a decade of work experience in the United States has shared his frustration over failing to secure a job in India, despite multiple attempts.

The man, who plans to relocate to Bengaluru next month, detailed his ordeal in a Reddit post titled “Unable to land jobs after 11 years of work experience in the US.”

“What am I doing wrong? I have a Naukri.com profile, I’m reaching out directly to people on LinkedIn, applying to jobs on career websites, and even getting referrals. But nothing is working out for me,” he wrote on the r/returnToIndia subreddit.

The user said he had worked in consulting and finance firms in the US and was seeking similar opportunities in India, but his efforts so far had led nowhere. Readmore!

“I’m hitting a wall and feeling like a total loser. I’m currently in the US but heading to Bangalore next month,” he added.

The post quickly gained traction, with several social media users offering advice. Many suggested that Indian HR departments are reluctant to consider applicants based abroad.

“I think Indian HRs won’t take you seriously until you are physically in India. Many people say they want to return but back out at the last minute,” one commenter wrote.

Another added, “Most HRs will not consider you unless you are in India.”

Others shared similar experiences. “I faced the same issue in 2023. HR assumes you’re just keeping a backup option in case things don’t work out in the US,” one user noted.

Another suggested a practical fix: “Make an explicit note at the top of your resume with your intended date of return and include a working Indian phone number.”
