A Chief Justice who happened to be a Dalit...

The nation was recently rocked by the attempted attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India BR Gavai when a 70-yr old advocate Kishore tried to fling a shoe at the former as he was upset at some remarks made by the Chief Justice during one of his judgements.

The Opposition Parties led by the Congress are calling it an attack on Dalits by the Hindutva wadis and directly pointing the blame at the politics of the Sangh Parivar.

A Dalit Chief Justice has been attacked…… A Dalit Chief Justice has been humiliated etc goes the diatribe of these people and the media too plays along with similar, catchy headlines.

This is precisely the kind of vitriol that has to be discouraged from both the politicians and the media. The advocate tried to fling the shoe at the Chief Justice not because the latter was a Dalit but because he was angry at the perceived sarcasm by Gavai targeting his religious beliefs. Readmore!

That the Chief Justice happened to be a Dalit was merely incidental. But by highlighting the caste of the Chief Justice, the incident is appeared to look like a target on a Dalit who happened to be the Chief Justice.

Even in other crimes where there is no casteist motive involved, the media nevertheless highlights the caste of the victims if they are not from the upper castes and spins the story to make it look like the victims were targeted because of their caste.

There is a stringent need to curb these kinds of statements that solely have vote bank politics or TRPs as their sole motive failing which it is not an individual or a community that will suffer at the end of the day but the entire nation.
